Students Respond to the Codes and Standards Survey by May 6

Students Respond to the Codes and Standards Survey by May 6 Students Respond to the Codes and Standards Survey by May 6 In an effort to maintain the highest level of quality, ASME regularly turns to its membership for feedback on its products and services. Earlier this week, ASMEs Standards and Certification department sent 15,000 ASME student members a brief e-mail survey asking for their opinions on a recently updated codes and standards brochure that the Society created for engineering students. Student members who respond to the survey by the May 6 deadline will be entered into a drawing for one of three Amazon gift cards. A copy of the brochure, entitled Examples of Use of Codes and Standards for Students in Mechanical Engineering and Other Fields, was included as an e-mail attachment with the survey. The booklet, which can also be viewed at http//go.asme.org/SCStudent, contains several articles exploring the different facets of ASME Standards and Certification as well as a bri ef overview of the Societys codes and standards program. Since it was updated last year, the brochure has received positive feedback. However, in an effort to continuously improve the codes and standards information it provides to students, ASME developed the new 12-question survey as a way to obtain feedback from students on the current version of the brochure and to solicit suggestions for improvements to the publication. All ASME students who respond to the survey by May 6 will be entered into a random drawing to receive one of three Amazon.com Gift Cards valued at $100, $50 and $25, respectively. Winning entries will be contacted via e-mail by June 20, 2014. Employees and contractors of ASME and their immediate families are not eligible for the drawing. Once contacted, winners must respond within 10 business days or another entry will be selected. A copy of the survey can be viewed here. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Donnie Alonzo, ASME S tandards and Certification, by e-mail at alonzodasme.org.

Prepare Yourself for a Media Job Interview

Prepare Yourself for a Media Job InterviewPrepare Yourself for a Media Job InterviewA media job interview is the chance to dazzle a prospective anfhrer with your background, skills, and ambition. But it also requires a great deal of homework in advance so that youll be the one whos offered the fleck and not become the victim of a bad job interview. Prepare yourself for a media job interview and stand out from your competition. Simply know what types of questions youll be asked so that youre ready to sell yourself effectively and have time to ask your own questions. Learn About the Boss Before Your Media Job Interview This gives you a quick way to break the ice and calm your nerves. Use the Internet to find out her previous positions, where shes lived and any media awards shes won. Maybe you can compliment the photo of her poodle you notice on her desk- anything to avoid awkward silence. People enjoy talking about themselves. This will get the interview started on a mora informal note and let you see whether your kompetenzprofil boss is all business or enjoys some small talk. If theres an interest you share or other connection, mention it. Even if its as simple as saying youve lived in the same state, its enough to get the conversation going. Know the Background of the Company Most potential bosses are wary of job applicants whove applied everywhere and couldnt care less which job they get. By learning the background of the media company, you show that youve done some research and are eager to know more about the position than just what it pays. The New York Times and the New York Post are two newspapers that cover the Big Apple, yet their approaches are very different. You should be aware of whether the company is traditional or cutting-edge. That will dictate how you dress and how you should conduct yourself. A start-up company might give you chances for faster advancement, though there might be risks the operation wont survive. A generations-old media outlet may have more layers of management and structure, but it might offer more stability and long-term benefits. Study Current Events It doesnt matter if youre applying to be a Top 40 radio announcer or a local TV reporter, you will be expected to know the latest information about your industry. Some media managers even present pop quizzes to interviewees to test their knowledge. Depending on the position, find out whats going on in Congress, on the concert scene or at the latest electronics show. Even if youre not asked directly about current events, youll be able to bring them up in the conversation to show you keep up with the news. If the job opportunity is in another city or state, check out the local news website to get a feel for the issues of the area. Media managers want their new hires to hit the ground running and knowing about the mayor or local sports team never hurts. Expect to Have Your Skills Tested You may be asked to do more than recite what you know abo ut current events. An applicant for a writing position may be handed some copy and given 15 minutes to re-write it into an article. Dont panic. Your writing was good enough to get you an interview, so someone had to like it. Your worry may be about writing creatively. But what may be tested is your ability to write clear, understandable sentences with correct punctuation. Whether youre a magazine photographer or an on-air personality, if asked to perform on the spot, make sure you demonstrate your mastery of the basics. You will learn about the companys style after you are hired. Be Prepared to Talk About Your Current Job Its inevitable that youll be asked about your current job and why you want to leave. You may be tempted to say you hate the long hours, low pay and your obnoxious co-workers. While that may be true, its better to answer this question more cautiously. Theres nothing wrong with saying you want new challenges or that you desire to learn new skills. Make whatever y ou say sound positive. Its common in the media industry for employees to want to move up to bigger markets, experience a new city and work for the top media outlets. If you simply want to further your media career, just say so in the media job interview. However, if you take a swipe at your current company or boss, that negativity can leave the interviewer concerned that you may be a problem employee. Who knows? She may be best friends with your current boss and your words may come back to hurt you. Be Candid If Youre Out of Work In media, being out of work is a consequence of a competitive industry. It happens to most of us and may have even happened to your prospective boss at one time. If you were laid off, theres no shame in saying so. In these economic times, supervisors are well aware of the new focus on the bottom line and cost-cutting mandates when revenue doesnt meet projections. If you were terminated for another reason, be honest about the circumstances without reveal ing every detail. Theres no need to drag down the interview with a long-winded explanation of your situation. Saying that your company was bought out and the new owners wanted a change of direction may be all thats needed. Decide How Much of a Commitment Youre Willing to Make You might think a media manager loves hiring new employees. Truth is, most would rather keep the people they have and build their skills rather than start from scratch with a new face. Thats why you may be asked what kind of commitment youre ready to make to the company. A boss doesnt want a here-today-and-gone-tomorrow worker. You need to say youll be there two years, minimum. The first year will be taken up by training, which gives you one year to be a solid producer. If you can honestly say you want to be there longer, emphasize that youre willing to sign a long-term contract. Youre giving your boss the peace of mind knowing that she wont have to repeat this process for a while. Anticipate Probing Que stions Some potential bosses will go beyond the standard questions to try to find out more about you. What was the last book you read? or What was the biggest mistake you ever made? are sometimes asked. While its impossible to predict what you might face, prepare yourself for probing questions. Consider why you want to work for this company, in this position, and what goals you want to accomplish. The answers can be part of what you tell the interviewer. A few bosses may be trying to trip you up to test your grace under fire. After all, if youre applying for a reporting job, youll have to use this same skill set to ask tough questions during your own interviews. But the majority of potential bosses just want to get to know you. Youll find the anxiety you may feel will ease when you realize that theyre taking a risk with anyone they hire and that you both want to make the correct decision and have a happy, productive future.

Elizabeth OConnor-Cowley - Director, eeni meeni miini moh

Elizabeth OConnor-Cowley - Director, eeni meeni miini moh Elizabeth OConnor-Cowley Director, eeni meeni miini mohPosted October 13, 2011, by Sue Stevens Its good fun but hard work You need clear vision, passion and sheer determination. If running a business were easy, everyone would be doing itSince the year 2000, eeni meeni miini moh has been making its mark in childrens fashion on the world stage The company welches short-listed for the Premier of Queenslands Award for Emerging Exporter and also won two categories (Kids and Innovation) in the 2006 Australian Fashion entwurf Awards. Cate Blanchetts son, Ignatius, and Naomi Watts baby, Alexander, have also been seen in the eeni meeni miini moh signature beanie. Made from all-natural fibres, the eeni meeni miini moh sortiment is unique and is in great demand from mums and dads the world over. What is eeni meeni miini moh?eeni meeni miini moh is a childrens lifestyle brand. Primarily we create seasonal collections for newborn babies to 12-year-olds. Within the next six to 12 months, however, we will also be expanding the brand to include soft toys, accessories and a bed linen range to complement our childrens fashion collections. How did you come up with the idea?Initially, I studied visual arts at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) majoring in painting and realised that I would need to do something else to feed myself. Shortly after graduating, I fell into the commercial furniture industry wzu siche I worked for a German brand and stayed for 10 years. I have a real passion for contemporary furniture and loved working with interior designers and architects. Ive always been ambitious and entrepreneurial and had a great desire to design a product, produce it and market it to the world. The only problem welches that I had no idea what that product was going to be For years it tormented me and I searched high and low for that big idea. It wasnt until my husband and I were on a holiday in Europe and looki ng for gifts to bring back for a friends children. We found ourselves in many gorgeous childrens boutiques and suddenly we thought thats it We could develop our own contemporary, innovative childrens fashion and lifestyle brandHow long did it take to get started? From the initial idea to our first container arriving was 18 months. Both my husband, Philip, and I had demanding careers and it was 18 months of much planning and long, long hours working late into the night most nights and every weekend. During the product development/planning stage, I fell pregnant and gave birth to our first son but somehow we got there in the endWere you ready to go into shops when that first container arrived?Yes and no While we had product to sell, we didnt have a single confirmed order to dispatch Our freight forwarder said to us right, when the container arrives, bring all your orders over and well get them picked and packed and out to store. Philip and I looked at each other, laughed nervously and said we dont have any orders. He was horrifiedWe had plans to present our product at a Lifestyle/Gift trade fair in Sydney that month so there was a plan It was imperative that we came across as being professional and having product in stock so we took the risk of ordering a container that was a massive risk. We were determined to work hard to make it happen. We both have vision, passion and drive, so failure was bedrngnis in our vocabulary.Do you have children of your own?We didnt when we first planned eeni meeni miini moh but we do now. We have two beautiful boys Emrys who recently turned seven and Anselm who is almost four. How is your work-life balance? Do you work harder now youre running your own business?Absolutely I read your interview with Anita Gleeson in Be Your Own Boss who works her own hours and ramps her time up or down depending on whats happening in her life. I wish We dont have that luxury, Im afraid. Its all just full-on for us and has been from the start. The se asons just keep ticking around so theres no down time unfortunately.Whats your point of difference from other childrens fashions on the market?Id say our colour palettes and styling. Our design language is unique and we only use natural fibres. We often receive feedback from our customers expressing their satisfaction for our high quality and the fact that our product washes well.Do you manufacture in Australia? We design our collections here in Australia and manufacture offshore to enable us to compete in the global market. Another reason that we have our garments made overseas is that we cant source some things locally, like the trims and accessories that we want to use. We also design and specify the fabrics and have them milled to our specifications to ensure our products are unique. What about the growth of your business in terms of staff?Initially it was mainly me in the planning stages. Once that first container arrived, Philip came on board and it was just the two of us for t he first six months. Then we were approached by a production coordinator who used to work for another company. To be honest, we didnt even know what a production coordinators responsibilities were at that stage. We thought theres no way wed be able to afford to hire people but we decided to meet with her nevertheless. We immediately realised that wed be mad not to bring her on board in some capacity After two weeks part time, she became full time because there was no way we could manage without her Shortly after that, we hired someone part time to help us with picking and packing. That person is still with us but not in a picking and packing role. Today we have a team of 15 so weve definitely grown over the past six and a half years. How important are reklame and marketing and what do you focus on?Marketing is vital. We advertise each season in leading childrens fashion magazines and, in addition, we receive a lot of editorial in Australia and overseas. Each season we also produce ca talogues which are very expensive, but in our opinion theyre a very worthwhile form of marketing. Another avenue is our website which is going to be updated soon.Trade fairs are another great way of building brand awareness. Each season we present our collections at the very prestigious Pitti Immagine Bimbo in Florence, Italy alongside the worlds leading boutique brands including Armani Junior, Baby Dior, Kenzo, DKNY and Burberry. Participation is by invitation only and we were honoured to be the first Australian brand to be invited to showcase our collections in a stand-alone space.Whats the hardest part of running your own business?Ultimately, as a director and business owner, we take on 100 per cent of the risk. At the end of the day, if something goes wrong, its all on our shoulders. The hours are also hard particularly with a young family. Philip and I do a lot of hours in the office but we also do a great deal at home. So our children do suffer from the long hours we put in.Th e business never leaves us. We take it into the shower, we take it to the grocery store, we take it to bedWhats the best part? You get to choose the people you work with, for a start. You get to choose your team and we have a fantastic team. Also, youre definitely in control of your own destiny so if things arent going in the direction that youd like them to go, you can change course and steer things in a different direction to arrive at the goal that youre striving for. What advice would you give to others thinking of starting their own business?Definitely employ people who have a great attitude. We think its imperative to get the right type of people. We hire first on attitude and secondly on skills. You can teach someone skills but you cant teach someone with a bad attitude how to get a good one. Unfortunately, we didnt employ people to assist us in the planning/start-up stage, which meant our initial growth was slower than it might have been. Its all a juggling act and its difficu lt when you dont have a lot of funds. In summary its good fun but hard work You need clear vision, passion and sheer determination.
